1:
Cut off both the root and hairy end of the
onion. |

Stand the onion up straight on a flat end.
Cut it in half. Peel off the thick outer skin. |

Place the half-moon shaped flat end down on the
cutting board and then proceed to slice as thin as you need. You may
want to keep your fingertips tucked slightly inward as you hold the
onion so as not to accidentally cut yourself.
